The 21:00 Takeaway Stop

Article 11 of the historic-centre regulation (Delibera C.C. 20/2023, amended by 76/2024 and 19/2026) bans the sale of alcohol of any strength, in any container, for takeaway (asporto) from 21:00 to 06:00 inside the UNESCO centre. That covers shops, producers and bars selling to go. Article 11(2) adds a ban on selling any drink in glass (vetro) for takeaway in the same hours, and lets the Mayor tighten containers, drinks and hours by ordinance, though never table service inside bars and restaurants.

The practical line: if you want a bottle for your room, buy it before dinner. A glass at a bar table is not affected.

The 02:00 Last Call

Article 12 stops the serving of alcohol of any kind from 02:00 to 06:00. Drinks served at outdoor tables on public land stop earlier, from 24:00 to 07:00, except at authorised fairs, festivals and markets. So the answer to what time bars close in Florence is two answers: the terrace stops pouring at midnight and the room indoors at 02:00.

Why There Is No Pub Crawl

Article 13 bans promotions, discounts and advantageous offers on alcohol. It also bans selling or serving alcohol to itinerant groups organised to drink cheaply across several venues, and it names the format twice, 'alcol tour' and 'pub crawl', before banning anyone from promoting or organising one. The consequence for a visitor is simple.

A street seller offering a crawl ticket in the centre is selling something the city has made illegal, and a bar advertising cheap rounds for a group is breaking the same article. The legal version of a guided evening is a tasting walk with food, where the drinks are part of the meal. The sunset food and wine tour is that format, with a Negroni and four wines over three and a half hours.

Ponte Vecchio and New Year's Eve

Article 8 lets Ponte Vecchio host only jewellers, watchmakers and art or antique dealers, and it bans serving food and drink (somministrazione) on the bridge. There is no bar on Ponte Vecchio and the regulation keeps it that way. New Year's Eve has its own rule on top of Article 14.

Every New Year the Comune adds a glass ban for the historic centre: no takeaway glass, no drinks in glass outside the premises and no carrying glass bottles, from 19:00 on 31 December to 07:00 on 1 January, with fines from €25 (about $29) to €500 (about $585). The normal closing hours are lifted that night, and the glass rules still apply.

The historic-centre regulation sets four clocks that decide how a Florence night runs. Times below are from the Comune's own text, current version.

What Aperitivo Is

Aperitivo is the drink before dinner, served with something to eat. In Florence it sets the start of the night, and the bars that publish a time put it in the early evening. Volume on Piazza Santo Spirito prints aperitivo every day from 18:30 to 22:00 on its own site, and that window is a fair guide to how the city moves.

Order a Negroni, a spritz or a glass of Chianti, sit outside while the terrace rule allows it, and move indoors or to dinner as the evening goes on.

The Negroni, Born at Caffè Casoni

The story goes, as the Negroni brand tells it, that in 1919 Count Camillo Negroni asked bartender Fosco Scarselli at Caffè Casoni in Florence to replace the soda in his Americano with gin. Casoni later became Caffè Giacosa, closed in the early 2000s and reopened in 2018 as Caffè Giacosa Roberto Cavalli. Details of the tale are contested, starting with whether the Count held the title at all, so read it as the brand's version rather than settled history.

What it gives a visitor is a reason to order the drink here rather than anywhere else. The sunset food and wine tour builds a Negroni stop into its Oltrarno route.

The Historic Cafés

Gambero Rosso's Bar d'Italia 2026 guide gives its top award in Florence, Tre Tazzine e Tre Chicchi, to three names: Ditta Artigianale, Gilli and Paszkowski. Caffè Gilli at Via Roma 1/R has been in business since 1733 and today runs a patisserie, a chocolatier, a bistrot and a cocktail bar, according to its own site. That makes it the one historic café on the list where an aperitivo is part of the offer as well as coffee.

Paszkowski holds the same award. Ditta Artigianale is the coffee specialist of the three, so treat it as a morning stop rather than an evening one. None of the three publishes a drink price we can repeat.

Locale Firenze

Locale Firenze is No.21 on Europe's 50 Best Bars 2026 and No.22 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, the highest placing of any Florence bar on either list, according to 50 Best's own entry. It sits at Via delle Seggiole 12r, 50122, inside the Concini palace, a building dating to the 1200s with Renaissance features from the 1500s. Bar manager Fabio Fanni runs a low-waste programme built on lab techniques, and 50 Best prints the average cocktail at $22.

The bar opens Monday to Sunday. The same entry lists it among the bars 50 Best tracks in Florence, and the ranking is the reason to book it rather than walk in on a whim. For a first drink after sightseeing, the Santa Croce basilica is the nearest page on this guide.

Gucci Giardino

Gucci Giardino is No.29 on Europe's 50 Best Bars 2026 and No.99 on the 51-100 extension of The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, per its 50 Best entry. Gucci opened it in 2022 at Piazza della Signoria 37r as an all-day café and cocktail bar, so the same room serves the morning coffee and the evening list. 50 Best prints its average cocktail at $22, the same as Locale. The address is the point: it is on Piazza della Signoria itself, so a drink here needs no detour from the sightseeing day, and it works as the first stop before crossing the river to the Oltrarno for dinner.

Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina

Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina is at Piazza Pitti 16, facing the palace. It pours small-production Italian wines, many of them by the glass, and runs wine tasting flights. It opens 12:00 to 23:00, with lunch from 12:00 to 15:00 and dinner from 19:00 to 22:30, and its own site says reservations are highly recommended.

Take that literally and book before the day starts rather than walking up at dinner time. It pairs with a visit to the Pitti Palace across the square, and the rest of the evening can move on to Santo Spirito and the Oltrarno.

Le Volpi e l'Uva

Le Volpi e l'Uva is an enoteca at Piazza dei Rossi 1 in Firenze. Its site gives the address and a phone number, +39 055 2398132, and publishes no opening hours, so call before you build an evening on it. We print nothing more than that, because nothing more is published by the bar itself or by a list we can cite. It earns its place here for the same reason Pitti Gola does: it is a wine bar first, with a name that has lasted, rather than a restaurant with a wine list.

The Il Santo Bevitore group lists three addresses on its own site: Via di Santo Spirito 64/66, Via di Santo Spirito 60 and Via di Santa Monaca 3r. The site does not say which one is the wine bar, so we do not name it. For a glass with a story attached, the city's wine windows once passed wine through the wall, and for tastings at the source, the small-group Chianti trip and the Chianti wineries tour leave Florence for the estates.

Piazza Santo Spirito

The square on the Oltrarno side is where the city's evening happens outdoors. Volume, at Piazza Santo Spirito 5/r, is the fixed point: it occupies the former Bini hat workshop, founded in 1887, and its site lists it open every day from 18:00 to 02:00, with aperitivo from 18:30 to 22:00 and live music. That is the full regulated night in one room, from the first spritz to the 02:00 last call.

The outdoor tables around the square stop serving at midnight like every terrace on public land, so the late part of the night moves inside. The district, its workshops and its churches are on our Oltrarno guide.

Sant'Ambrogio, east of Santa Croce, is the second area to try. No bar there publishes a site we could verify, so we name none and point you to the district instead: Sant'Ambrogio and its market streets are covered on our Santa Croce district page. Between the two, Borgo degli Albizi links the Duomo end of town with Santa Croce, and it holds one of the two Irish pubs below.

Fiddler's Elbow

Fiddler's Elbow at Piazza Santa Maria Novella 7/R opened in July 1990, according to its own site. It opens Monday to Sunday from 12:00 to 02:00, shows sport on five screens and runs live music and karaoke nights. Those hours cover the afternoon as well as the night, and its closing time is the city's own 02:00 limit.

The square outside is the one in front of Santa Maria Novella, so it is an easy meeting point for anyone staying near the station end of the centre. Check the pub's own site for which night is live music and which is karaoke before you go.

The Lion's Fountain

The Lion's Fountain is an Irish pub at Borgo degli Albizi 34, 50122, and its site lists 7 HD TVs for live sport. Borgo degli Albizi runs between the Duomo end of the centre and Santa Croce, so the pub sits on the walk home for anyone staying east of the cathedral. The site publishes the screens but not the hours, so check the day's programme before you set out for a particular broadcast.

Like every bar inside the historic centre it stops serving at 02:00, and any table it puts out on public land stops at midnight.

Tenax

Tenax, at Via Pratese 46, 50145 Firenze, opened in September 1981, and its site shows it running its 2025/2026 season. It sits outside the historic centre, on the north-west side of the city towards Peretola. That distance is the practical point: plan the journey out and, more to the point, the journey back.

The programme is season-based and published event by event, so check the site for the night you want rather than assuming a weekly slot. For getting home late, a taxi is the answer we can give, because no night tram service is stated by the sources we read.

No club inside the historic centre has an official site we could verify, so this guide names none. A flyer near the Duomo that pairs a club with a drinks offer is advertising something Article 13 bans.
