Cinque Terre from Florence

Nothing runs direct. Priced on 29 August 2026 for Thursday 10 September 2026, the earliest useful chain left Firenze Santa Maria Novella at 06:08 and reached Monterosso at 09:45, a 3 h 37 crawl with two changes for €22.45 (about $26.30). The fastest was the 07:34, into Monterosso at 10:12 — 2 h 38, two changes, €29.60 (about $34.60). The 07:28 was the value pick at €22.30 for 3 h 03 with a single change. Coming back, the 17:42 from Monterosso reached Florence at 20:33 and the 19:07 Intercity did it in 2 h 32, arriving 21:39, both around €22.30 to €22.45.

Break that into legs and it makes more sense. Florence to La Spezia Centrale runs 2 h 03 to 3 h 07 depending on the mix of regional, Intercity and fast trains, from €15.90 for an all-regional routing up to €25.70 for a chain that includes a Frecciarossa. From La Spezia the coastal line takes 21 to 25 minutes to Monterosso and a few minutes between each village, at €8 for a single. Regional legs need no reservation; any leg on a Frecciarossa or Intercity does, so a chain that includes one locks you to that departure.

Two practical notes. Trains within the villages are short and get packed between 11:00 and 16:00 in summer, which is exactly when a day-tripper is moving; buy the Treno card if you plan three or more hops, since three singles already exceed the price of most single tickets you would otherwise buy. And children aged 4 to under 12 travel at half fare on regional trains, the one discount Trenitalia states plainly. Real connections, out and back

Departures priced in one sitting on 29 August 2026 for Thursday 10 September 2026. Connection patterns change with the timetable, so confirm on the day; what does not change is that every option involves at least one change.

Which villages fit in five hours

Three, comfortably; four if you treat one as a photograph from the platform. A workable order is Monterosso first — it is the end of the line and the one with a beach — then back down the coast to Vernazza for the harbour and the walk up to the castle, and Manarola last for the late light on the terraces above the water. Riomaggiore and Corniglia are the two most often skipped, Corniglia because it sits above its station with a long stair up.

Village hops take a few minutes each, so the constraint is the wait, not the ride.

The national park sells a one-day card in two versions. The Treno card bundles unlimited second-class travel on the La Spezia–Levanto line with access to the Via dell'Amore and the Sentiero Verde Azzurro, local buses, guided park visits, the Case Lovara trail, station toilets, park wi-fi and reduced entry to the CAMeC museum in La Spezia. The Trekking card covers the same trails and services without the trains. Both are valid until 24:00 on the day you choose, and the date can be changed only once, within 24 hours of purchase or of travel and only inside the same tariff band.

For 2026 the park abolished the old Plus category and folded Via dell'Amore access into the Treno card, describing the effect as an overall reduction of €7.50 against the previous Plus arrangement. What it does not do is publish the resulting price anywhere we could read it: the shop shows figures only after a date is selected inside its booking widget, and the tariff pages return errors. So we print the €7.50 change, which the park states in prose, and no price, which it does not.

The rule that catches people is the Via dell'Amore. Access is limited and requires a reservation, which you can make after buying the card — but you can make it, and the park recommends doing it online rather than queuing. If the paved cliff path is the reason you are coming, book that slot before you commit to a train.

Whether the card beats singles is arithmetic you can do at the station: one hop costs €8, so a day involving three or more village moves is the case for the Treno card, while a day spent walking between two villages and eating is not.

Trail status: one section is closed

The park's own notice, live on 29 August 2026, concerns the coastal path most day-trippers want. Trail conditions change without much warning, so re-read the notice on the park site the week you travel.

Do the arithmetic before the romance. On the fastest connections we priced, you spend about five and a half hours moving and get about five on the coast, and that is on a weekday in September with everything running. In July the trains between villages are full, the platforms are crowded and any slippage in a connection eats the middle of your day. Nobody who has done it describes the travel as pleasant.

It still works for a specific traveller: one fixed base in Florence, no luggage to move, an early riser, and an appetite for one long day rather than three moderate ones. It does not work for families with small children, for anyone with a booked museum slot the next morning, or for anyone whose picture of the trip involves swimming, lingering over lunch and photographing the villages in evening light. The light that sells this coast arrives after the last practical train back.

If you can shift your plan at all, sleep on the coast — La Spezia or one of the villages — and give it an evening and a morning. That is not a link we monetise here and we make no hotel claims; it is simply what the timetable argues for. If you cannot, take the coach. Handing over the connections is worth the money on this route in a way it is not for the walled town an hour west or for the eating day at the fast end of the rail network, where the train genuinely beats every alternative. All three cards run 12 hours or more, which tells you the coach does not beat the train on speed — it beats it on attention. You are collected in Florence, driven to the coast, and moved between villages by local train or boat with someone else holding the tickets, which removes the two changes and the platform waits that make the DIY version tiring.

The $63.71 day is the most-booked of the three and offers a walk or a stop at the tower square as alternatives on the same departure; where the walking option goes depends on which trail sections are open, and as of 29 August 2026 one of them is not, so ask at booking rather than assuming. The $54.67 street-food version is the cheapest way to reach this coast from Florence at all. The $91.51 day adds the tower square on the way, which suits a traveller collecting famous places and disappoints one who wanted the villages — you cannot do both properly in 12 hours, and the Pisa page covers what that stop is worth on its own.

What none of the cards state is how many hours you actually get on the coast. Ask before booking if that number decides it for you; the operators answer, and the answer varies by departure and by season.

There is no scheduled public coach between Florence and this coast in any official material we hold, so the only bus that goes is a tour bus. Our catalogue has no private day trip either — the three cards above are group departures, and a private car with driver is something you would arrange directly rather than book from a page like this one.

Driving is possible and rarely a good idea. The villages restrict traffic and parking is limited above them, so most drivers end up leaving the car at La Spezia or Levanto and taking the same local train they could have reached by rail from Florence, having paid motorway tolls for the privilege. At the Florence end the ZTL runs Monday to Friday 07:30–20:00 and Saturday 07:30–16:00, with a summer night ZTL Thursday to Saturday 23:00–03:00 from the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October; the fine amount is not stated on the city's page, and hotel guests must register their number plate at reception. A Florence bus or tram single is €2 (about $2.35) for 90 minutes, €3 on board, which covers the ride to the station from a park-and-ride.
